How Leaders can create a culture of motivating communication

The Five Ws of CommunicationCreating a culture of motivating communication takes time, effort and trust. It is sometimes uncomfortable, and at times can upset the power structure in any organization. Yet it is absolutely rewarding. Your organization cannot survive in an atmosphere of secrecy, stagnation and assumptions.

If you want to motivate and influence your team, beat your competitors and delight your customers, you have to invite and expect people to communicate, and listen carefully to the messages they convey.

Open communication transmit the message in your organization that everyone contribution and input matters and respected. The communication loop energizes people with the power to generate new idea in the work place.

Great leaders understand that the feeling of importance, being respected and sharing ideas motivates people.

As a leader you have to assess the current lines of communication.

Here are some suggestions that you can foster an environment of open, successful communication in your organization:

Ask people what kind of information they would like to receive that they currently do not get?

Part of creating an environment of trust and open communication is to ensure that your team has enough information to be successful on a daily basis. As a leader you have to ask yourself whether you communicated enough to set up your team for success. Pose the question to your team today by asking what information they are missing for them to be successful leaders?

Engage others into the conversation loop

As leaders, we have to help others have a voice in our organization. In order to help everyone be engaged, especially those who have been silent for a while, we need to share the following questions: “What do you think?” “We have heard couple of ideas about this topic, what else would you like to add?”

Get input on meetings

Seek input on meetings as part of the on-going communication journey. Ask people how meetings could be conducted to foster more open communication. Get input on how and when the meetings are not conducted in the most efficient motivating way to your team.

Maximize Decision participation

Great leaders take participation to their advantage when they have to make an effective decision in their organization. It could yield to better decisions. It also creates a motivating force as people have a say in the decision process and taking part in executing an action plan.

Forge feedback loop

The best leaders rely on feedback to inspire their teams because it reinforces the positive climate and helps people to recognize when improvements can be made with their on-going feedback to you as a leader. Try to conduct a “feedback round” in a meeting to give people the opportunity to share their perspectives. Have each person give their personal feedback that may have been missed in earlier conversations.

Ask people to challenge you and each other to create meaningful feedback loops. It’s important to stay open even when we don’t like what we hearing.

No matter where you are in your level of communication, effective communication will give you a competitive edge with everyone you deal with. Everyone wins!
