Why we need more Grateful Leaders?


Let me ask you couple of questions:  When was the last time someone acknowledged your efforts and contribution? When was the last time you personally acknowledged someone and communicated it to them in a heartfelt way?

Most of us go through life without a real sense of gratitude and appreciation for what matters the most. We are busier than ever. With technology available to us at any moment, the 40- hour work week is long gone and work-life balance is still an art that many have yet to master.

If you are a leader in your organization, you are probably faced with enormous challenges and opportunities to create value in the market place. There is more competition than any other time in history. Some organizations are still stuck at the Industrial Age mindset of products and services, while others have capitalized on their most valuable asset-people!

According to recent studies done by Gallup Organization, only 27% of employees are engaged, 52 % are disengaged and while 18% have “checked out”. It begs the question for every leader out there: Do we take our employees for granted? And why do we not make the time and the effort to appreciate and acknowledge the people that we value the most?

Leaders who believe in people’s potential and what they bring to the table-the value, service and contribution their people make will set their organization apart from their competitor.  The war for talent doesn’t happen out there, but in your own company’s backyard. The leader who has acknowledgment and appreciation in their leadership Tool Kit will win the day!

Employees want to know that their contributions matter and building a culture of appreciation and acknowledgment is a simple, cost-effective method that companies can implement immediately to keep people engaged and achieve meaningful purpose in their lives.

So, how do you as a leader, create a culture of appreciation and acknowledgment that keeps your employees engaged, inspired and productive?

It’s not a secret that engaged and appreciated employees are more productive and passionate about creating powerful connections with customers, vendors and shareholders. It’s a win-win for everyone!

But what is employee acknowledgment? Judith W. Umlas, the author of The Power of Acknowledgment and Grateful Leadership -Using the Power of Acknowledgment to Engage All Your People and Achieve Superior Results, shares the following insight:

“Acknowledgment is a heartfelt and authentic communication that lets a person know their value to the organization and the importance of the contribution they make.”

So how we can become more grateful leaders and take it to the next level in our organization and communities? Judith W. Umlas shares in her book Grateful Leadership the following strategy that she calls “The 5 Cs of Acknowledgment for Grateful Leaders” to incorporate into your relationships at work immediately:

Consciousness: Become Conscious of the acknowledgments and gratitude that you already have in your mind and spirit.

Choice: It is your Choice whether to deliver the acknowledgment or to merely keep it floating around in your mind. Choose “yes” whenever possible!

Courage: It is courageous to deliver heartfelt and authentic acknowledgment—it makes us vulnerable. If you feel that you need to summon Courage, you are on the right track!

Communication: Determine the best way to reach your recipient. It is simple to communicate your gratitude and appreciation once you choose to do so.

Commitment: Once you witness the benefits of gratitude (for example, watch your people come alive, take more initiative, and work with more passion and engagement), Committing yourself to being a grateful leader becomes easy and logical.
